It is a 2-dose series, given 2 to 6 months apart.
Also recommended for adults 19 and older who are or will be immunodeficient or immunosuppressed due to disease or therapy.
Not used to prevent chickenpox.
Shingles is a painful skin rash caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (the same virus that causes chickenpox).
If you are one of the 99% of adults 50 and older who have been exposed to the virus that causes chickenpox, the virus remains in your body and can reactivate at any time. About 1 in 3 people in the U.S. will get shingles in their lifetime. Even if you feel healthy, immune function declines with age, increasing risk.
