Prevnar 20 is a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. It does not contain live bacteria, so it cannot give you pneumococcal pneumonia. Conjugate vaccines pair proteins with small, inactive pieces of bacteria to train your immune system to recognize them. Prevnar 20 helps protect against 20 strains of pneumococcal bacteria that can cause invasive disease and pneumonia.
The CDC recommends pneumococcal vaccination for all adults 65 and older, and for adults 19 to 64 with certain risk factors such as diabetes, chronic heart, lung, kidney, or liver disease, or smoking.
Prevnar 20 has been studied in adults with chronic conditions.
Even if you received another pneumococcal vaccine before, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether Prevnar 20 could add protection.
